Jesé in the nick of time

Jesé appeared in the nick of time for Spain in Istanbul (2-1). The match was heading to extra-time when the Canarian popped up in the 90th minute with a goal to send Spain into the quarter-finals. The striker scuffed his shot, but the ball luckily took a deflection off Fuentes and found its way past goalkeeper Sánchez.

'La Rojita' sent the mighty Mexico packing, who had caused Spain all sorts of problems. The South Americans opened the scoring in the 2nd minute through Arturo González and could have added more in the first half as the side had Spain under the cosh, but could not find a way through. After the break, Lopetegui's men improved, as the coach looked to the bench for inspiration. Suso and Denis were brought on and the equaliser came in the 74th minute when a corner was headed in by Derik. Then in the dying seconds, Jesé clinched the victory to send Spain into the quarter-finals.
